Got me a real purdy silver laced tricorn from Kittyhats
http://www.kittyhats.co.uk/
And she sells straws and her other half has done tarred hats in the past. Talking to them at the last TORM he did tell me that they were a 'pain in the *rse to do' though.
That's my score to date. Three. I haven't killed anybody for years, and don't intend to ever again.'

If I understand correctly, the knitted caps are right for ordinary sailors of any type (although every man should own a tricorn, for personal bedroom use if nothing else  ).

Dave B is wearing his cap in this picture:

If you are going for 'Golden age of piracy' sort of time, say early 1700's, then I don't think there is any such thing. What you have is 'Slop Contract' clothes, which were sold cheap on both fighting and merchant ships and in port, but were optional, so you can mix and match that stuff with anything else.

When I have a minute, I'll look up the slop contracts to see what sort of hats they offered, or you can look yourself, they are posted up on the pirate bretheren website here:

http://www.piratebrethren.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=11

Also there are some great pictures and explainations about the slop contract gear here on the 'gentlemen of fortune site:

sally pointer made my hat, and it's excellent, my absolute favorite hat. it's a simplified monmouth cap.
