Hello, New around here

Postby alfred the bowyer » Tue Dec 20, 2011 6:18 pm

Hi Folks,

I'm new around here and know next to nothing about re enactment, I do know how to make longbows and arrows. I wondered if there was a group anywhere that might find it handy to have a bowyer around and from whom i could learn more about re enactment?
I'm close to Mansfield, in Nottinghamshire.

Any particular period you interested in? Muddyevil / Wars of Roses etc? Helps to narrow down the search for a suitable group or groups in your area.

Thanks Bad Viking and Neil of Ormsheim, I've obviously found the right company!!

I'm not sure really, I'd like to be able to use my technical skills in a realistic setting, when i say i make longbows i do it with an axe and draw knife in much the same way it was done when the bow was a widely used weapon, so i guess any period i could find a niche would be ok.

We are from all over the place Alfred but our master gunner lives in Derby and we often use a scout hut there for our get togethers. Take a look at www.wythe-retinue.org.uk for a laugh if nothing else... Re-enactment used to be about hitting each other with large metal objects and there are still large battles lkike tewkesbury which get several thousand participants. There is also Living History where those of us who have reached enlightenment (oh all right, getting to old for a good scrap) do demos and talk legs off donkeys in interesting surroundings. I have been in several groups where I have both fought, fletched, made maille, talked about the raising of armies etc etc. There is always room for a bowyer in such living history. There are other groups around of course - look at the groups section of the forum. Come along to events and introduce yourself. This is a hobby with lots of friendly people who rapidly take on the mantle of an extended family. I am sure you will enjoy it.

Beaufort Companye (Wars of the Roses) are based in the Midlands with several members in Notts (including South Normanton) and Derby's. They are actively recruiting archers and archer related skills at present.

See there website and facebook page for contact details, both can be obtained with a simple Google search.

The Northern Monkey Battalion (Woodville Household) have members in the Midlands. Little Jim fletches arras (he's in the Kentish Wideboys Batt.) we make lots of stuff as part of displays and have a lot of archers. You can find us in the societies forum of this site.

Mark is just one of the Northern Monkeys (they being anyone living north of the Gap.) Trev is one of the Steppe people (4th Batt. Frozen Wastes) as he is from Yorkshire.

Hi,
If you are looking for a Longbow specific shooting club, Sherwood Forresters, Barlborough, Chesterfield. Sure they would be very interested in sampling your wares! Google it, they have a website!

We're a little to the North of you (Sheffield), but KIBS has a notable archery contingent and several amature craftsmen in our number. Check us out on http://www.knightsinbattle.com if you think that we might be your kind of group, then you'd be welcome!

Best wishes

Colin
