Broad brimed hats?
Were there any type of non floppy broad brimed hats worn in the mid/late 15th century? I know there were straw/reed ones, but were they are felted or leather ones?

Bit late isn't it?

And why is Richard O'Brien wearing Fox's hat?

I love the Arnolfi Wedding, the detail and symbolism in it is extraordinadry.

this one is too early being about 1350, but am adding it here as an interesting example of a surviving solid brimmed medieval hat in case it helps in the general visualisation of what might still be around http://www.concealedgarments.org/cache/28593/

No she isn't, it's the style of her dress. Not that it would have mattered, they were already married when they posed for the painter.

And if you get a hi res version and zoom in the pattern on the hat looks very much like it's made from sewn straw-plait.

Nother big version that wouldn't fit on the board but when you zoom you can see the pattern better.

Modern black straw-plait for comparison

Re: Broad brimed hats?
What I need is some thing more stiff than the one I have at present, which is very good but gets blown out of shape a lot ( and crushed under the gear in the van).

I think this type of straw/reed hat is very good, and would be stiff.

[I know that doesn't meet the requirements as specified, although I'm not sure why you've made that stipulation]
Also, is the black hat picutred made of straw? [I think it might be]
And I agree, the Arnolfini hat probably is plaited straw (despite me owning the same design in felt) and not just looking at the picture.
Any hat that expensive in felt would probably be made using a collapsing block/former to allow the taper, otherwise it's too uneven for that posh, and the earliest evidence I know for those is Tudor. [But I could be wrong.]
Anyway, mine is only semi-rigid [not the first time I've said that] and is more vulnerable to damage in tansport than your average hat.
I have an interest in medieval "top hats", and I do wonder about the construction of hats like the one shown on the grotesque at St Peter's Church at Winchcombe, or Albrecht of Bavaria on the Tomb of Isabella of Bourbon.
[both I think will Google].

Re: Broad brimed hats?
Here's another Van Eyck with a seriously large hat, and I'm sure I've seen what can best be described as a stove-pipe in a Bosch (I think)

Bugger me it's Woopert!

Nowt to do with hats, just found it whilst cruising images for a stiff one for Tod.
