The German Army 1939-45:Eastern Front 1941-43

Nigel Thomas, illustrated by Stephan Andrew. Osprey Publishing 1999 ISBN 978-1-85532-795-5. Part of the men-at-arms series. I don't know much about the German Army so it was worth my purchase, I doubt anyone would learn anything new from it who was not in the same position. It's a Osprey Book so you...

Sir Ranulph Fiennes. ISBN 978-1-444-79208 2014 Hodder & Stoughton. Possibly the worst history of the battle I have ever read and a contender for the most boring book in world history. About three quarters of way through, having explained how in various ways his ancestors basically created the na...

Bad History

Emma Marriott, MOM books ltd., 2011, isbn 978-1-84317-617-6. A fantastic but somewhat upsetting book which explores and disproves so many perceived historical truths. Such as Francis Drake destroyed the Armada, Britain was an integrated part of the Roman Empire, the USA did not contribute to the All...

The Hussite Wars 1419-1436

Stephan Turnball, illustrated by Angus McBride. ISBN 978-1-84176-665-2, Osprey Publishing House 2004. Interesting for the views of the Hussite War Wagon and the commentary on the use of artillery. I was not so taken by the distinct anti-Catholic tone of the author though. Apart from that it offers e...

Ganada 1492: the twilight of Moorish Spain

David Nicolle illustrated by Angus McBride. Osprey Publishing House 1998, ISBN 978-1-85532-740-5. I have been interested in the campaign to finally remove Moorish control from southern Spain ever since I found out the part played by Edward Woodville during a crusade in the 1480's. This book was ligh...

Angus Konstam with illustrations by Tony Bryan. Osprey Publishing House (New Vanguard series). ISBN 978-1-84176-443-6. First published in 2002. Like any Osprey book, you know pretty much what to expect. I was expecting more on the war galley as used in the 15th century, mostly it is about those from...

Author David Nicolle, illustrated by Gerry & Sam Embleton. Osprey Publishing 2012. ISBN 978-1-84908-848-0. Again a new area for me to investigate. Like all Osprey books it is a bit hit and miss. What I did find annoying and a little PC is the author constantly apologising for the Portuguese of t...

The Doubleday Publishing Group 2008. ISBN 978-0-385-52468. A fantastic book that has actually re-ignited my interest in medieval re-enactment and Italian 15th century history. I will not go into the book in too much detail as it would ruin what is a devilish real life murder mystery (the Pazzi Consp...

Timothy Venning, Pen & Sword 2013, ISBN 17819127-x A problem with history is that it happened in the past. Historians (and I speak as one trained as such) tend to see the past neatly packaged into cause and effect events that seem to roll on from each other. I have been asked by students why Hit...
