If its going to be made of velvet you need to be aware of the nap - it is very noticeable if a piece is going the wrong way because of the light catching it - it can make it almost a different colour. I have the piccie from the book in front of me - 5 metres of 60 ins wide should do it unless you wa...

I do it too - I'll be at Cossy, Loseley, Twinwood, Rougham, Tewkesbury, Berkley and Herstmenceaux - Oh yes Tatton and Bosworth too. If you want something sooner you can always send me an e-mail saying what you would like and I can send across some images of things that I have made previously ( and t...

I totally agree with Frances about creative speed at the last minute - this results in being too tired on Saturday night to get to the beer tent. When we are out every weekend at events during the summer I tend to allocate Mondays as rest and recuperation and the dreaded paperwork and obviously Frid...

I know that one............. Its down to the good old sheeting or cheap fabric - I always make a complete prototype ( including boning if needed) before embarking on anything I haven't tackeled before. - that way - any mistakes, mis calculations or whatever aren't on the actual garment. OK twice the...

Are you positive that it is pure silk vlevet? It seems very cheap to me - usual going rate is around £30 a metre.

A lot of suppliers call it "silk" velvet - it being mostly poyester.

having said that if its pure silk - grab all of it.

I think that the importers and cheaper end can provide a good starting point but, I have to say, that often from a costumiers point of view they skimp on materials - for example, I have seen so many houppelandes offered for sale without the amount of fabric in the skirt required I use 8 metres of 60...

I think it should be an open forum - those viewing from the customer side here have made a very valid contribution. I definitely do not think it should be a place where folks can either slag off or give lists of personal "bees knees" folk - that is best done elsewhere. we can generally talk about no...

I would define a trader as one offering goods and/or a service for recompense My personal interpretation is that, whether purely bespoke or not, if goods or services change hands for money then a trade has been made. I suppose it is equally valid to say that a trade is also made when exchanging good...
