i'm picking up what your putting down....it's funny you posted this becuase it was only the other day i was having a conversation about this....unfortunately i don't know of any historical references to medieval and darkage drill commands - but i've not tried looking yet!

basegews are the small circular plates that protect the opening at the front of the armpit, they are often decorated and fluted later in the 15th century

i guess it really comes down to what the aim of your display aim is all about, wether you want to illustrate what an individual would or could be wearing to battle in the mid 14th century or what the up to date armour was like, it's all about your aims!

it looks like the eagle has it's wings spread and is using it's beak to scratch it's back - as if the fellow making it was looking at an eagle as he cast the badge, but the eagle moved at the last minute

well the sword will be more part of the costume moreso than something i'd use on the field, i'm not thinking of ordering one in the very near future, but i do need to know which direction to go in terms of swords, i am also looking out for polearms - posh ones like poleaxes, glaives or an ahlspeiss ...

well, thankyou for the replies - been a great help, when i save up i know i can get this sallet and not get told off - and i know know the difference between a sallet and kettle hat, so i have something to talk to the public about....good job everyone and thanks again for the replies!

so would "helm" have been used as a generic term for helmets, in the same way most people use "gun" as ageneric term for firearms?

don't worry MarxMan i'm pickin' up what your putting down! sallet is the term used to describe a helmet that has a neck guard or tail integrated into it's shape unlike an armet or bascinet whitch has no such form of neck protection

makes sense! thanks Stuart - i guess this could also be interpreted as the tilted sallet i have often seen in 15th century images, they are often not clear...

question about a type of kettle hat

if the picture uploads correctly....was this type of kettle hat common in England during the 2nd half of the 15th century? was it worn by English soldiers? i have a number of images portraying French/European soldiers wearing them and the English (in the same picture) wearing various types of sallet...

i do apologise i forgot they were one size, ASH armour does look very good - i saw hs brigandine at tewksbury last year, still think about it....
