Re: hay box cooking
My immediate thought was, check in Scouting for Boys if you can find a copy. I'm fairly certain Baden Powell covers hayboxes (although it is a very long time since I read the book and no longer have my copy) and his experience was largely military in South Africa at the end of the nineteenth century...

Virtual commemoration
As many of you will know, the King's Army--the Royalist half of the English Civil War Society--has a parade in London on the last Sunday in January to commemorate the execution (or murder) of King Charles I. Obviously this couldn't take place this year but a video, including some of last year's para...

Re: TARM?
We went. Seems silly to drive 175 miles each way without trying everything. TORM was busy. We got some silk fabric which was conspicuous by its absence back in the autumn. We got other bits from regular traders there. We spent a lot of money (see 'silk'!) After lunch we popped down to the village ha...

TARM - The Alternative Re-enactors Market would seem to be taking place in Ryton on Dunsmore village hall over the same weekend as TORM.
I was expecting something to have been posted here about it, but there's been a little on Facebook and nothing else.
Any info, anyone?

At a loose end in London Sunday 27th?
The King's Army of the English Civil War Society will be commemorating the execution of Charles I with their customary march down the Mall, parade on Horseguards and march back up the Mall on Sunday morning. The march usually starts around eleven. http://www.ecws.org.uk/28th-january-2018-commemorati...

Interacting with MOPS?
In the spirit of cal's post here , this is my post for October. My group were recently at a village event, basically a large fete but with a bit of re-enactment added. We use a corner of the car-park field for a living history display and do a couple of drill displays and the like as part of the ma...

Re: These forums - undead, or still twitching?
It is a problem with all forums, not just this one. Facebook's immediacy means it's easier to dip into. Also, all your 'feeds' are there in one place, you don't have to visit a whole series of websites just to see if anything's happening. I like forums. In many ways they are much better than Faceboo...

No 'what I am going to buy at TORM' thread?
We seemed to have missed out on the usual 'TORM intentions' thread, so here are some comments about it, after the event, instead. In a change for us, we stayed over with some friends who live only an hour away, so were able to be at Ruyton by about 9.15. That, of course, meant we were queueing befor...

Suit of armour wanted to borrow
A bit of a long shot, but... A friend, based near Weymouth, is involved in a production of 'Me and my Girl' and is looking to borrow a suit of armour. Apparently it 'comes to life, grabs a sword and walks off with it'. I suspect that a 'real' suit wouldn't actually work for this and also suspect ver...

Re: What do MOPs mean when they ask if something is real?
I know, personally, how hard it is to approach a complete stranger and then open a meaningful dialogue - especially when that person is dressed so differently to the social norm. <snip> I guess that, for many members of the public, approaching a historical reenactor at an event, they might feel som...

Playford does apologise for publishing Yet all this should not have been an Incitement to me for Publication of this Worke (knowing these Times and the Nature of it do not agree,)But that there was a false and surrepticious Copy at the Printing Presse, which if it had been published, would have been...

We spent lots. And have had serious discussions with a couple more traders about spending more.

Thing is, its a bloody popular market. Saturday was crazy busy for us. Didn't stop till well into the afternoon. Sunday certainly wasn't too bad either. We always do very very well there. That's good to hear. It would be really handy to have a good market close to home. We can do TORM and back in a...

Since the upgrade to the forum software (which is a real improvement) I've been finding that I'm being logged out all the time. I do select the 'keep me logged in button' every time. One thing which may not be helping is that I use four different devices (two computers, phone and iPad) to access the...

Re: Received your email & am here.
Of course, this is one area where Facebook wins over a forum (and I'm speaking as someone who likes forums and in many ways prefers them to FB).
There's no 'like' button for people to say 'interesting stuff, thanks for posting' without cluttering things up with a load of posts which just say 'thanks'.

I think one problem might be the legal differences between the US and this side of the pond.
I would be arrested in very short order if I went trekking with anything like that kit over here.
Nice looking stuff, though.

I thought it was all a bit 'shouty' (I suppose that's likely if Greg Wallace is involved).

Re: This may be a little off topic as it deals with dancing
I've emailed a friend about this and she suggested 'Jenny Pluck Pears' from Playford as being the only 3/4 tune (and it's only the second part) she knew.
It's a nice dance and might be worth a look.

Re: This may be a little off topic as it deals with dancing
You may be out of luck. The first three-time dances I can find instantly are minuets and they're a little late. What's the tune? It might be possible to use it as a 6/8 jig. Unfortunately our historical dance music expert isn't going to be at practice tonight (it's not a historical dance group, he j...
