That's always a pain.
One one occasion, as I the person I was portraying wasn't British, I was tested on the appropriate language as well. Luckily I had a better knowledge of it than my questioner. ;-)

Forum security

I just noticed that there's no SSL/TLS active on this site - apparently there is a LetsEncrypt certificate installed but it expired on the 21st.
Of course, this is something that will need to be fixed soon. I'd be happy to assist if I could be of any use.

Re: What do MOPs mean when they ask if something is real?

To me, the question, ‘Is it real?’ reads as, ‘Is this item an historically authentic original item, on loan from a museum’s vault of exhibits, as opposed to a methodically researched replica made by you, the owner?’ Of course, lacking the correct subject-specific vocabulary, the member of the publi...

Re: What do MOPs mean when they ask if something is real?

What I think the question means when applied to a weapon is some combination of: 1. Is that an original weapon from the period, an accurate modern reproduction or some sort of fake wallhanger? 2. Is it still capable of being used for killing the enemy, i.e. is it a live-firing rifle or a sharp sword...

Re: Shooters' Rights

Thanks for your reply. I've had similar concerns with insurance in the past, e.g. one insurer who would only ever say verbally that a particular weapon I used for HEMA fell within their policy terms. Perhaps I will see if I can get a copy of the policy to take a look at. the shooters rights web site...

Re: No Comments, very disappointing.

It is not uncommon for people not to comment on posts like these. Don't know why it is just a thing. But the view count is very good and says the posts are worthwhile. Presumably because, though the article may be interesting, people don't have any specific question or comment to make and threads w...

Re: Public Liability Insurance

I've been using personal insurance from Sportscover, which offers £2M public liability and personal accident insurance for about £50 per year, though I think one can pay more for higher cover. They also offer insurance for specific events or trips if required.

Thanks for your replies.

Dave - do they have a means to send online payment? I'd be interested to know what the policy is like but could not see a copy - is there anything particularly notable on yours?

Shooters' Rights

I've been looking for insurance for a new group - at present we're using individual cover from Sportscover Direct but this only offers £2M liability and is a bit of a nuisance for much more than a handful of members. The Shooter's Rights insurance looks good from what is shown here: http://www.shoot...

Re: Eventplan Ltd Events 2016...WW1, WW2 & sheffield multipe

Yes EventPlan has new management as Howard has retired but will be still seen around playing rather than managing. For you info about Hatfield, We had put it on our Facebook page. Thanks. Good to know that Howard will still be about, so we might bump into him from time to time. Thanks for the C&...

Re: Eventplan Ltd Events 2016...WW1, WW2 & sheffield multipe

Isn't Hatfield now cancelled? I had heard so but it's still mentioned on the Eventplan website, along with some surprising (to me, anyway) news about a change of management.

Re: Crimean Russians

It is something we have been mulling over for some time- the problem is getting suitable guns- I believe that springfields bear a reasonable resemblance to the Russian muskets. I've been thinking about doing Crimean French, and have had similar difficulties. Other than buying antiques (expensive an...

Re: "Modern" firearms

It might also be worth asking on the WW1 forum I'm on there now and pursuing a lead for a dummy repro Lebel. When I posted here I wasn't familiar with that forum, but a WWI re-enactor friend pointed me in the right direction. A dummy is certainly useful for showing to the crowd &c. but it would...

Re: "Modern" firearms

i have a rfd who could convert it to something other than a stupid french calibre. That is an interesting thought - I had not considered conversion. I'll have to investigate further as you suggest, as well as determining from my local firearms officer what steps I would have to undertake to "u...

Unfortunately I'd need a Lebel, which I have heard are difficult to find ammunition for, as well as being difficult to find and rather expensive.

VCRA, theres been many threads about it already here and elsewhere. I always search before asking for advice, but was not able to find anything. Czartank's information is the sort of thing I was after, and it appears from discussion elsewhere that for the era that interests me (WWI) I will probably...

"Modern" firearms

Hopefully no-one minds such a question, but I was wondering if anyone would be able to point me to some guidance on the use of firearms for 20th century periods, e.g the world wars. I'm familiar with the requirements for black powder periods (mostly having done Napoleonic for a few years) but not la...
