Vintage clothing workshops
Hello A lovely friend of mine is a great seamstress and teacher and is thinking about arranging some workshops to help people to up-cycle, alter or make from scratch 1940's and 1950's style clothing. She lives in the Herts/Bucks area and there is a great cafe in Berkhamsted with a retro room that co...

Tewkesbury Mustard - does anyone still make this?
According to the book "Traditional Foods of Britain" by Laura Mason, a type of mustard made in Tewkesbury was so famous in the 1500s that Shakespeare even wrote it into a line in his play Henry IV: "His wit's as thick as Tewkesbury Mustard" - an insult used by character Sir John Falstaff. http://www...

Re: Early Lace Making bobbins
It seems that C15th is stretching it a bit, and C16th is when lace making began in the UK. The Lace Guild are as good an authority as we'll get. http://www.laceguild.demon.co.uk/craft/history.html Apparently the nearest to early bobbins would be the current Bucks Thumper, or the Brugges, neither of ...

Early Lace Making bobbins
I have read that lace making was around in the UK in the very late C15, but was not prevalent until much later. I am wondering what the early English bobbins would have looked like, and do we still use something similar today? Would they have been plain or spangled? Round in section or square? I rec...

Strangely enough Ikea has very good, strong, 100% linen fabric which takes dye very well.

I have been putting together a 14th century home cure/apothecary box for the new season and meeting the Wise Woman, Jayne Milner at the ILHF has been an inspiration. Jayne's website has many, many unusual herbs and spices for sale. http://www.jaynemilner.com/ There is a lot of information out there ...
