Re: Getting Started- Roman Soldier
thanks, after consideration looking at late C4-mid C5 as kit available, timeline works for location and some good resources out there. Looking for good kit guides (rather than re-inventing wheel et al). Got riveted sleeveless mail already so that's one less thing. Planning to make my basic kit, orde...

Getting Started- Roman Soldier
Been tinkering with the idea of doing this for some time now. I'm on the Isle of Wight and Brading Roman Villa are keen to work with me... I want to do fighting displays as well as artifact handling etc. so plan to start a small group. Thinking of 3-4thC AD as that dateline works for the Villa- any ...

'It was not unknown for lynch mobs to enact summary justice on lone foragers.'
Now there's an idea for a good display
Just take time to setup hanging harness properly- botched hangings look awful!

Re: Licencing - muskets etc.
Hi Ian, our FO (as your in Hampshire too) would want to check you were a bona fide re-enactor and then licence you to BLANK fire a C17 pistol. For the .22 would want letters of permission to shoot on suitable land and preferably completion of probvationary membership of a HO licenced rifle range (ty...

Re: Licencing - muskets etc.
funny enough the musket chap was not a 'pirate' was in an allegedly highly trained regiment -won't be giving more details and seeing as I've done over 20 shows this season no point guessing ;-) More worryingly some of the Spack Jarrow crowd (my term for panto pirates with no idea how awful their por...

Re: Licencing - muskets etc.
Second the above- not just FAC's either- at one event a chap fired a musket at someone within 4m and seemed to have no idea that this was dangerous. I generally reccommend the blank firers rather than live for most people- still dangerous if not used with caution but somewhat 'safer'. One problem is...

Sure about that? I thought any amount of BP required a store cert for keeping on a site overnight?

Re: Licencing - muskets etc.
I use the live-firers for show and tell and the blanks for handling- another option is to have a deac for show and tell/ handling and blanks for action. As others have said if you still want the real deal get some experience using them with other groups first. Also if doing highwaymen the riding les...

Re: Licencing - muskets etc.
Lots of good advice been given but one thought- Gary Bate (Derbyshire Firearms) is producing very good blank firing pistols in a wide range of designs and periods. If you use black powder blanks (Gary makes them for parabellums but they will take the BP blanks) they sound right and give a more reali...

Re: ECW Cartridge Boxes?
Interesting- just today made a wooden insert for my waist pouch to hold cartridges for my blunderbuss. I use baking paper which works nicely. Earlist ones I've seen seem to be 1680 or later and shoulder slung bags. Will have a look through my books though...

Re: How are you finding trade ?
Interesting stuff- as this was my first season trading I have nothing to compare with. Handily as I combine trading with LH/ Cannon displays and the pyrotechnics I am finding a reasonble balance- just landed a big local display firing cannons/ small arms for 3 days so that pays for a lot of new equi...

Re: Where to buy a decent polearm
For a common soldier buy an old solid slasher head (bilhook with long cocket), gind the blade to 3mm thick and smooth, attach to a good pole- ta-dah a really great looking bill. Better yet get a blacksmith to add a front and back spike! OR/ If your at Hestmonceux see Les Nash- he's been making some ...
