poplar is pretty easy to find from commercial timber yards that hold hardwoods as well as softwoods. It is also called tulip wood if that helps

Re: Leeds armouries question

There is some parking available for free in the streets between the armouries and the main road but it's not the securest of places.
Parking in Leeds is a bit of a mare.
The armouries is only a 5-10 min walk form the main bus station though, so it's worth seeing if there are hotels on a bus route.

Re: Spear supplier

I can do completed spears if you want to supply the heads. Best thing would be to order the heads and have them shipped to me direct rather than having to pay twice for postage also, cheaper than having me source them for you. Shafts are £25 fitted, plus postage (about £20 regardless of how many the...

Warrington Xmas Market

Hi all, I've been at the warrington Xmas Market last week and will be there for the next 2 Saturday's. It's their first year, so they didn't advertise very well for traders. Anyway, it's only £20 a day for an 8x6 hut with lights and power included, plus a table and 2 chairs (the huts have closed fro...

Re: Wooden gladius trainers

Oh no, I'm the one making it as a comission for someone else.

I just weighed the latest batch of swords on a more accurate scale and they are all around 900g - 1kg without lead.

The one I just made takes the weight up to 1.5 kg, but I could go up to 1.8, maybe 2kg

You need to have a section you can tighten around the stomach, and make the shoulder straps cross over. That should help a lot. Primarily, your hips should be taking the weight

I have done "spatha" versions as well. Just slightly longer, but not flared at the end. Thought that might be a bit too dangerous and look way to rude. :-D

Oh we constantly get the garden-shed woodworking brigade taking photos then commenting loudly that 'I/dad/grandad could make that for half the price'. Really? Does he has the time (and the inclination), and the contacts to buy quality oak, handmade nails and hand-forged iron work to complete the lo...

Im finding its up and down all over. I spent the last 2 months at various shows and you just couldnt tell.

Carlisle: Ok but not great
Otley Show: OK but not great
Blenheim Palace: Waste of time
Cheshire Show: Good on the day, plenty of orders

Weather seemed to make no difference

Right here is the best place for info. If you can do demonstrations then many event organisers would want you at their shows. For tents, the buy and sell forum and Ebay are your best bets. New tents are quite expensive. If you are new to re-enactment or historical trading, come along to the ILHF at ...

If you have a specific image or style in mind, I could make them.
There are also a lot of traditional wooden toy makers out there, but they tend to be expensive or outsource to India
