Which one is it? I can see loads of different events but nothing about a Roman one.

Re: 13th century armour

Thanks for that reply, an interesting point but it does make me wonder though if they would have them widely used, not just the cost but the way the mosaicists would have learnt their trade. Like the Islamic geometric tile mosaicists I would have thought a lot of the patterns would have been in thei...

Re: 13th century armour

Thanks for the info. I doubt these were done from a pattern book, I think these were done off the cuff. There are different opinions about the possibility of patterns books in use, there's no hard evidence that I now of, though there were individual plans.

Yes, definitely the economy end of the market! Are there mail shirts that go that low?

Re: 13th century armour

I did wonder about that, I would say the mosaicists (and I use the term loosely!) were showing mail that went down to the ankles as you can see the difference between that and the tunics.

13th century armour

These rather 'basic' mosaics are from Ravenna, Italy and have been dated to 13th century. I'm really just fishing for some facts about the shields, armour etc. Is there anything about those that would date it positively in your minds?

Re: Video to sell on a website

Thanks for that Kate, that's just the sort of thing I mean. I was wondering too how many people buying online look at videos there? That website is a very good example of showing the whole process. Thanks for the link to Pinterest, I'll try that out.

Video to sell on a website

How many people who have websites where they sell supplies use videos? Do you have the odd one or two embedded or do you have say, a certain tool then a video on how to use it, another video explaining the different variations on something you sell (this would be as well as any text explanations)? I...

Online sales, suspect countries?

I'm just setting up the postage system on my new shop and was wondering, is there anyone here with an online shop that has certain countries they won't take orders from or require other confirmation from them, ie fax? Not sure that you can lump everyone in a certain country as 'suspect' and I have p...

I check in here every so often to look at the trading/events stuff and I agree that most Roman things go on on RAT but I'll make sure I drop in now. Mostly this site does seem to be medievil (y'know medievil, about 600AD - 1700 and you can have anything you like as long as it's brown  ) i've n...

Try Hinnie Annie as she gets glassware from Eva in Belgium who has made these before, in glass. The prices aren't too bad either.

Re: Roman Villa rebuilt

I must confess I've not seen any examples or mentions of wheelbarrows. For me the whole thing falls down on the lack of manpower. It just seems daft the 'expert' jumping up and down about authenticity then having only 6 workers on site. The cart makes sense but why have someone learning how to make ...

If you weren't aware here's the link for the programme on Channel 4 at the mo where they've got 6 modern builders building a Roman Villa using only ancient materials and methods. It's interesting..... http://www.channel4.com/programmes/rome-wasnt-b...in-a-day/4od#3154408

Neibelungen, Very good overview there of how things can easily get complicated very quickly even though it seems great when you get more orders coming in. I did look at getting an apprentice but apparently as well as the privilage of doing your work for you they also expect you to pay them :o

Re: Discounts for students

Thanks for the information everyone, I didn't realise that there were different organisations. I think what I'm going to do is just ask people to bring along some type of student iD to the workshop. I think it will just have to be run on trust, after all if someone is a student but genuinly forgets ...

I think you're refering to Flash Intro, where the whole page is taken up with nice pretty graphics which, like yourself get ignored by 99.9% of the population who hit the Skip Intro button  What I mean is where you have your normal Home page but part of it has a video. That way visitors to you...

I was wondering if anyone else here uses video on their website? I have one on my 'Buy Tools' page showing how to use some marble cutting tools. Discounts for students

Hi,

I'm looking at giving discounts for students who want to book on my Roman mosaic workshops and just wondered what I should do to verify they are students?
Do you just take it on trust? Also if you do offer a discount how do you calculate it, as a percentage?

Cheers
