I used to do the same, go to any pet shop and buy the largest raw hide knotted bone they do, soak in warm water for a few hours then undo it and cut in to strips. It does go a bit mushy but will dry out hard again.

I hadn't considered a straw mattress, and to be honest probably wouldn't go down that route as I wouldn't have space to carry a bale of straw to every show. Tesco had some mattresses a little while ago that come rolled up in a bag so may have a look at them.
I'm really bad at sewing so don't want to risk ending up topless in the middle of a battle if I try and make my own so if anyone's got any to sell please get in touch.
