At a guess, it is the second design - have a look at https://www.uboat.net/wwi/types/ where it looks like they had B, C and E types (presumably D sunk without trace before anyone had a chance to build it)

Paranoia - Chrome, Firefox and a Safari are turning into nagware, complaining that sites using http are “not secure” despite no one caring whether they are or not. Yes, the login name and password are passed unencrypted to the server, but unless you use the same username and password for online bank...

These forums - undead, or still twitching?
There are apparently 5241 registered members of these forums, and yet the only signs of life in the last month were one event announcement, four items for sale (three of which got zero response), a single post in a thread in the 1100-1500 section, and then a single spam post (advertising sushi in Du...

Re: Very odd (possibly LARP?) helmet which needs identifying.
Wow, that's quite an eyesore. It looks like someone has cut open a propane gas cylinder, extracted the domed part from the bottom, and then riveted on the rim and nasal in an attempt to make something which looks like a C9-11th one-piece helmet. Except that the shape of the dome is entirely wrong (r...

Re: Anglo-Saxon clothing
It's a collection of links to old re-enactment resources which were fair to very good in their time, but which will have been overtaken by more recent finds and academic opinions. Offering the links with no critique of their quality is not helpful, and pointing at a copy on a Korean site of an artic...

The time is correct - the one hour discrepancy is because your user profile is set to BST. To change this, click your name in the top-right of the page, select User Control Panel, and then select Board Preferences and set the timezone to UTC+0000 The forum software doesn't track your location, so ha...

Tournée could provide an encampment with combat and archery displays if that is what you're looking for - Edward I and II are our period, and we've worked in several castles over the years. I'll send my email address in a PM if you want to discuss further.

Read the response by Judith Jesch - it's very entertaining, and informative. http://norseandviking.blogspot.co.uk/2017/09/lets-debate-female-viking-warriors-yet.html?m=1 So, let's summarise: 1. They may not have the correct body, as the labelling and storage of the bones was haphazard in the C19th 2...

Congratulations, you have found yourself in a minefield but at least you've realised that rather than finding out the hard way. Almost all societies of 100+ members will have become a Company Limited by Guarantee for exactly this reason. Some are also registered charities, though the benefit of this...

In buildings, yes. As a portable item to be used on campaign or carted around (literally) wherever you went, no.So chairs definitely extended beyond kings and bishops

Re: WLTB medieval chair / stool
Quiverstock's chair is simple, elegant, and wrong for C13/14. There are curule chairs or stools from the Roman period, but the folding X-chairs with arms and back seem to appear first in Renaissance Italy, maybe from about 1500 onwards. Until then, chairs seem to have been rare and used by Kings and...

Re: Help identify this chainmail?
This looks to me like the butted mail which Armour Class used to make back in the 90s and early 00s before the Indian riveted mail became available. The tailoring of the shirt to expand at the bottom, and to spread across the chest, is typical of the fitting adjustments they typically added, and fro...

Re: Should history be fictional?
Is the assignment due on Monday? It matters because there will be those who deny that it happened, or rewrite it to paint their country as less belligerent, less culpable, or less illegal. Fiction teaches us how good fiction can be, but fictionalised history is just as bad as those who rewrite it. A...

Re: Use of Naturally Black Wool in 400 - 1100 CE Britain
Beware of selective reading or quoting, as what the YAT report actually says is: At Coppergate only one-third of the Anglo-Scandinavian wool, whether raw or processed, was pigmented (and the medieval wools were all white). White wool is vital if the fibre is to be dyed and dyeing formed a significan...

Re: So, how long were spears in the period of this sub-forum
With respect to Crecy, the cutting down of lances to make usable spears is purely an artifact of the cavalry being dismounted. They had several lances each and a sword, but on foot what they really needed was a spear. Plus by "cutting down" I assume they didn't shorten the length, but instead were r...

Re: Transition to Plate Shoulders..?
The standard reference for this period is Arms and Armour of the Crusading Era, 1050-1350 This gathers together manuscript evidence, carvings, effigies and other sources, and is as good a reference as we can ever hope to get. The only reference to shoulder protection is the small plates attached to ...

The "Practical" name generally refers to mass-produced stuff by Hanwei, which arrives in the UK at about £30 wholesale. They're available from several places at about £60-80 including delivery by UK post. In terms of durability, they have varied across the range from likely to break on first contact...

They're the family groups who exist to provide a focus for badly educated Americans who wish to revisit their ancestral homelands, and who may wish to donate a few pennies in the process for the upkeep of the clan chief's sadly neglected baronial pile. Think tartan wallpaper and carpets, kilts, Eton...
