Re: Templar Flag

Inspired by the really good answers I got, I did a bit more research (mainly to add referencing with links) and I have summarised the discussion with its results and my decision there: http://www.durhammedievalcombatacademy.org/Portfolio_Knight_Templar.html Brother Ranulf, I have credited you. If yo...

Re: Alchemist Re-enactor Project

Henri, I'm not sure what you are referring to. My project is just in the next 12/24 months to be able to have enough knowledge/equipment to be able to propose to any client in the North-east of the UK the re-enactment of an alchemist lab. It has nothing to do with current events, I don't even have a...

Re: Alchemist Re-enactor Project

JW, to answer your question, there are no chemicals that can be mixed that would do this so I think it's more likely to be a trick centered around the containers themselves, with secret compartments for example. Did you have a good look at the containers?

I also salute the deep encyclopedic knowledge of Brother Ranulf with my humblest bow. Much appreciated.
I hope to meet you one day in a reenactor event somewhere.

Alchemist Re-enactor Project

Hello, I'm interested in starting another alter-ego, a late medieval or early renaissance alchemist (I'm a professional chemist, hence my interest). Does anybody known any book sources they can recommend that would teach me about historical alchemy to get me started with the necessary knowledge? Tha...

Templar Flag

Hello, I'd like to make a Templar shield. I have a conundrum regarding the colours. I have found two medieval images (well, they look medieval to me), supposedly of templars. They show the flag being white at the bottom with a black band at the top. http://www.knightstemplarvault.com/images/beausean...

Medieval Chest

Hello, I need to get myself a medieval chest/box for my authentic tent. I have 2 options: a) Make it myself. Can anybody recommend suppliers of cut to size wood in the UK that would be able to provide the boards needed? I tried googling but the results are not impressive. b) Have it made by a talent...

Painting helmets

Hello,

I have a spare helmet that I'd like to paint with my coat of arms, just as an experiment. Does anybody recommend a paint that is matt, suitable for metal and that does not chip too badly when hit by a sword?

Thanks.
David.

Reenactment Group - Legal Status

Hello, At Dawn of Chivalry, we are currently an unincorporated entity. This means that the members could be held responsible for any legal case brought against us and not covered by our insurance. I believe a few years back, the unincorporated status brought a rugby club to its knees, with the "...

Re: Dawn of Chivalry Events - 2017

Sorry but as you can see, these are not our events, we are hired by English Heritage and they are in charge of deciding who comes. They usually have no traders in shows taking place on their properties as they have their own shops.

Weapon Stand for Show and Tell

My re-enactment group, like many use weapon stands for your display of weapons. Unfortunately, most (all?) of the designs are made up by ourselves and not necessarily historically authentic. Does anybody know of any medieval illustration in manuscripts that shows weapon stands, ideally 11th-14th cen...

Wash dirty clothes - Modern detergent

Hello, I have a lot of soft kit (13th century), wool and linen that is heavily stained with WD40 and sweat. I cannot shift the grime using Woolite detergent. Can anybody recommend a good modern detergent that will not chew up the fabric (i.e. not biological to start with) but that is good to clean p...

Supplier of Morgan Bible Falchion

Does anybody know of a place where I could buy a two-handed falchion similar to the one below from the Morgan Bible.
It must be suitable for re-enactment.

Re: Heraldic shield display at tournaments - 13th century

Based on these types of drawing that do not look 13th century to me but that may still be medieval, I need to check further:

http://www.medievalchronicles.com/medie ... urnaments/

As can be seen, lots of shield shapes items hanging up.

Heraldic shield display at tournaments - 13th century

If you were a knight going to a tournament in the 13th century, you'd probably have wooden shields representing your coat of arms that you'd want to hang somewhere to advertise your attendance. Was there any rule/practice regarding the display of these heraldic items around the tournament area? Wher...
