looks as if it should hold lots of interesting plants and maybe info and books, maybe even knowledgable gardeners who like to talk. It does have opening times, guess it's easier by public transport.

Six string 'cello??
I recently danced to a band with what looked like a six string 'cello.
What is it properly called, can anyone describe it's period, evolution, tuning etc. Viol? da Gamba?
The band also had fiddle and lute, and what looked like a fiddle played like a 'cello! Their music was Playford era.

There are few WW2 aviator reenactors who look "complete" because a Spitfire or Fokke Wulfe (etc) gets expensive and hard to store in a suburban family home. Having a "Crashed" one introduces all sorts of sharp edges fro risk assessment.

Re: Reenactment Group - Legal Status
NOW is a very good time to review what your organisation actually does, and pay the money to a law firm for consultation and creation of a Ltd Company. this limits the directors and members liabilities. Then you should look into insurances to cover injuries to people and damage to property during cl...

John Playford's English Dancing Master, which started in 1651 (tho some say 1650) and ran as a series until about 1720, is available in facsimile and modern type face many times on the www, complete with music. http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/playford_1651/ Mr Playford was a compiler, editor and publish...

Re: Should history be fictional?
Fiction is good, it's a distraction from real life, but it's NOT history. There may be historical references but fiction is not history. Usually, apart from some principal events, history is best researched from several sources, single source research from contemporary writing may work, but from non...

Fletcher, Carver, Butcher, Smith, Forester -trades of the period. John Playford, Mr Cosgill, Mr Beveridge, Miss Sayer Farrier, Currier, Brewer. Seriously up market names may still hark back to the French/Norman De Beer, De Burgh. Add a smattering of Dutch influence especially in East Anglia Don't kn...

Bearing in mind the smaller population and the larger number of growing forests I suspect that the historically accurate method would be to go to the local woods and chose and fell a suitable sapling or small tree. Walk inside the woods and the trees will be taller and straighter as they grow upward...

My point being that you could pick 20 different styles from the 20th century from flapper girl to rock n roller to mini skirt etc. I expect you could pick the same range from any century . So come as close as you can and miss all the obvious clangers -no-one remembers the era with any clarity!

Just think of the variety of fashion in the 20th century. There would likely have been the same variance in any period. Start by avoiding obvious anachronisms -eg zips and synthetics.

This is Am Dram, you don't need to buy the uniforms they'll be no use later OWALW is back to back catalogue as 2014, 100 anniversary of ww1, has passed. There must be dozens of prop hire firms who made costume for OWALW who would like another hire for the uniforms hire at thespis.biz may be a start ...

Unless you find someone with specific experience with making gun barrels then it's likely that some competent workers will refuse the job for the ongoing product liability issues.

Re: Who Made The Best Cannons, & Cannon Plans
Firstly China would NOT be a place I'd buy a barrel from, Chinese alloy car wheels have a poor reputation for casting quality with inclusions and voids sometimes found on x-ray, second you will have to guess what alloy they used could be tough or brittle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYWDuXadosA ...

Be absolutely certain that you can (physically) and may (legally) keep your weapon suitably secure. If it's really heavy you'll need a crane to put it in a gun cabinet.

ORDCON tends to be organised at very short notice but it was always in October, just when fireworkers are busy! The organisers certainly used to be senior members of the Institute of Explosives Engineers ( iexpe.org ) who's office may be able to assist with the current contact details.

I'm looking for gents white hose to go with a/ a 1750 outfit and b/ a 1815 outfit. I'm thinking of silk or fine wool. I'd rather they were a moderrnly acceptable shade of white, distinctly more white than "natural".
