Re: Regency chemise back closing
The kind of garment from the museum does not appear to have any stiffening for support, and would probably have been worn over stays and a shift. If you use a very fine linen or cotton (sshh - not everyone approves of cotton as early as this!) it will be so contained that you will not find it adds a...

Re: Regency chemise back closing
Not being difficult, but why do you need it to be back opening? All the extant, and documented Regency shifts I have seen, apart from figures in churches, have large enough necklines to get the head through easily, tightened with a draw string if necessary. Also I don't remember ever seeing a Regenc...

Is everyone sure it is actually a man's jacket? With the less than ideal provenance it could be a woman's jacket, I'd have thought.

I think if you have some suitable buttons you can get links from bead shops. I'm not sure if this has them, but I am almost certain I've bought them from somewhere similar.

Do you have a date for that picture sir? He seems to be earlier than the earliest visual I have for linked buttons, which is about 1720. (A naval chappie at Rougemont,House, Exeter, as I recall.)

Re: Taming the fabric stash?
I'm getting rid of stuff to all my costuming friends, as we will be downsizing in a year or so, (from a three storey house)and I am retiring (at last!) What will I do with a filing cabinet of cotton thread, hooks and eyes and other haberdashery, and other things like ribbons, laces, let alone the fa...

Re: shawls for children
As far as I am aware, shaped shawls, which is what I suspect you are thinking of, did not exist that early. For cold weather, anther "dress" or kirtle, or other garment would be worn. Several layers were worn for warmth. I suppose it would be possible to wrap a piece of cloth around the shoulders, b...

Try http://www.amazon.co.uk/History-Hand-Kn ... _rhf_p_t_1 which is an excellent source for knitting information.
Knitted stockings were certainly made by hand during Tudor times, but the above book will give you a much better idea of what was knitted and when.

Used clothing in the 18th century
I know I have read an article about used clothing in the 18th century, but don't remember what or where. Does anyone else have a reference for me?
As a side bar, do you know if used clothing was shipped to the colonies in America for re-use?
Grateful thanks for any clues.

Re: Taming the fabric stash?
It's all your fault! I spent yesterday organising the stash boxes (there is other stuff for another time.). Found fabric I don't even vaguely remember buying, that will save me some money. I have enough scraps to make about 5 full size quilts, and should never need to buy fabric for modern clothes e...

I'm about to go and look - I have wool, in a sort of swirly, circular-ish pattern, plus a silky look one and... and...and...wait and see! (Nothing modern.)

Black, in my opinion, is used on an awful lot of Victorian clothes. I have several metres of stuff that might work, and am dispersing my stock. Will send samples.

It might be worth looking for "Goth" spectacles, or "Steam punk". on E bay.You used to be able to buy a simple wire framed pair in a shop in Soho, fairly cheap, but I don't know if it is still there.

Re: Taming the fabric stash?
I have bought (not enough) sealable and stackable boxes from Staples, and the original intention was to box by fabric type - linen/wool/silk/anything else. However, that only works if you have enough boxes, otherwise the spare cottons go in the silk box which had some space, the "anything else" goes...

You can have it as a gift if we can get it to you - I resent postal costs! http://www.amazon.com/dp/0486283577?tag=vintageconnec-20&camp=14573&creative=327641&linkCode=a...

As far as the Governess goes, I believe - no proof - that she would adjust her dress according to what she was accompanying her charges to. So, visiting a museum, smart day clothes, visiting rich aunt Mabel, smart morning clothes, chaperoning the young ladies at a party, evening clothes etc. All tho...

"Oxford Scholar clothing" John Wycliff?
I've had a query through another site and thought someone here would know. "I chose to go with the 14th century in honor of John Wycliffe. Are there any pictures of Oxford scholars' robes/hoods/caps etc. online? Wouls a belt have been worn - any other accessories?) " The lady is hoping to adapt some...

They are - often custom made - you have to fill in forms and give measurements. And the leather is beeootiful - purrs!lucy the tudor wrote:My suspicions were correct then ( sigh) I'm sure they're worth it.
I have a second hand pair and they too are really comfortable.

I'm guessing now, as it's years since I looked at the prices, but probably not less than £250.00, and upwards! Some of the E Bay ones looked pretty good, I must say.
