Re: Customs Men

Hi Tom, So what I've found so far suggests that they'd like have worn civilian clothing, but I'm still looking. I'm also looking at the general set-up of counter-smuggling operations in the late 17th/early 18th centuries, but a lot of books seem to use Revenue men, customs men and riding officers in...

Re: civilian weapons

Seldom shall you see one of my countrymen above eighteen or twenty yeares old to go without a dagger at least at his backe or his side" Interesting! Any idea of style/design of daggers for lower classes? I'm sure that the typical Three Musketeers style dagger would have been very much out of re...

Re: Plague Doctors in UK

Aren't there drawings from the time of the classic beaked plague doctor? I am sure I have seen this somewhere.

I too would be interested in any primary accounts, and accounts of exactly what they did

Medieval Groups - South West

Hello, I'm trying to compile a list of medieval groups (13th - 15th century) based in the South West, around Wiltshire, Somerset etc. I'm already aware of the following: Company of Chivalry College of Chivalry Sutton Household - Don't know much about these guys Woodville Household (WoR) - I think th...

Uniforms and Clothing

Hi Folks, I'm looking for English Militia uniforms from before the 1757 Militia Act, ideally around 1730/1740? Any recommended books or anything I'd appreciate it. Also looking for general guides on mid 18th century civilian clothing, middle and low status ideally. I'm looking to move centuries from...

Society Questions

I've been asked to look at a couple of different periods on behalf of a friend, so wondered if anyone could help? Stand and Deliver - Does anyone know how to contact these chaps? Crimean War - Are there any groups in the UK who do this, and are there any groups in the UK portraying Russians? If not,...

Re: Riding Officers/Land Guard

Thanks for the info. I love the idea as a really low-key living history display, possibly leading to skirmishes etc. in a slightly bigger group. A lot of public conciousness around it, but few know what it was really like

Hi Folks,

Can anyone provide me with a definitive list of 12th/13th century reenactment groups? Happy that it's my period of interest now I'm finally in a position to return to reenactment. I'm Wiltshire based

Re: 12th Century Research

Hi Ranulf, Thanks for that succinct reply. When I referred to their "signing" of Magna Carta I was using the accepted but inaccurate perception that the baron's signed it, which I am aware they didn't. Henry de Bohun, son of Humphrey de Bohun, was one of the clause 61 barons. Whilst I'm no...

Uniform Development - 1685 to 1715

I'm interested in the development of British Army uniforms from the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685 to the War of Spanish Succession. Is there a visual record anywhere, or suggested reading? Particularly interested in the First Foot Guards as the fought at Sedgemoor and Blenheim

Thanks

Wiltshire/South West Medieval Group

Hey Folks, Still got my eyes open for a Medieval group (12th - 15th Century) in the Wiltshire/Somerset/South West area. Some sort of semi-regular mid-week training would be helpful, especially as I am potentially training for ordained ministry, thus making my weekends a premium. As a result of this,...
