I think you've absolutely put your finger on it there! I'm wondering about the psychology of the battlefield, and one of the question which came to mind reading the thread was " what is a long distance in these circumstances", and that led me to consider whether we were seeing medieval war...

this is all really interesting stuff, I'm just reflecting on how the tactical issues may have influenced development of the weapon, if a mass loose of arrows at a target in the field "by appointment" really was the strategy of the day then would there have been any need to have numerous ar...

Agreed Jolz,
but the original post was talking about trimming trees not cut and seasoned timber, I guess I err on the side of caution because my father had problems with it years ago.

Take care with yew, it's really poisonous, don't be handling it with cuts on your hands,or breathing dust etc.

Danish oil makes a good seal, and can be polished up with beeswax, keep the bow flat in a cool place or hang from one knock

Thanks Bad Viking and Neil of Ormsheim, I've obviously found the right company!! I'm not sure really, I'd like to be able to use my technical skills in a realistic setting, when i say i make longbows i do it with an axe and draw knife in much the same way it was done when the bow was a widely used w...

Hi Folks, I'm new around here and know next to nothing about re enactment, I do know how to make longbows and arrows. I wondered if there was a group anywhere that might find it handy to have a bowyer around and from whom i could learn more about re enactment? I'm close to Mansfield, in Nottinghamsh...
