Re: Fresh look for the forums? Yes or No - Thoughts
I agree: the present look is nice and clear. I'm never convinced that the looks of a site relates to whether or not people want to use it as long as things are clear.

Re: canvas tent
To avoid the need for full PPE when treating the inside of a tent, simply erect it inside-out.

Snapshots from the Boer War
In case you are interested, I have posted a thread in the Books etc. forum on a new book about the Boer War: a collection of photos taken by an infantry telegrapher. It's here: http://livinghistory.co.uk/forums/viewt ... 24&t=33447

Snapshots from the Boer War
Confession: I haven't read this yet but it has been recommended by a work colleague and I thought that the unusual subject would be of interest to many of the re-enactors on here. Snapshots From The Boer War (by Owen David Powell) contains more than 90 previously unpublished photographs taken in Sou...

An Alternative View of Britain - The Hundred Years' War
by Timothy Venning (Pen & Sword Books, ISBN 978-1-78159-126-0) This is a book with a split personality. Some chapters are well structured, taking a single potential change at a time and working it through over a page or two. They use the author’s research into the Hundred Years War well, and increas...

Just another plug for this excellent book: though since reading it I have had to redescribe my 'arrow spoons of Albucasis' as 'a medieval interpretation of Dioclean cyathisci from the description written in the book of the Roman writer Celsus'. Still doesn't trip off the tongue...

Nice to see some cannons for a change, very nice photos... You must be kidding! My father has become obsessed with capturing muzzle flash; I've got hundreds of images of cannons. It's something I'm trying for too, except that I have deleted hundreds of images of cannons. I have exactly one excellen...

I find mine invaluable for my warhammer. Others in our group use them for axes. I think they're good for anything with a short shaft with a wider head. As noted by others, a sharp sword would be a bit hazardous but a haft won't do any harm.

Re: Seeking advice on finding and joining a group
I agree with what's been said so far, so just to pick up on a point which hasn't really been answered (apart from an aside by Graham): it doesn't matter that you don't know much about the period. I suspect that's true for most newbie re-enactors, with the possible exception of WWII ones because peop...

I... have decided on portraying an 18th century lady of gentle breeding, the land holders wife or sister. Re: How do you get started?
Ideedee's comments are absolutely the way to go when you're developing your script. I think the point of your question is that you don't yet have the character, and until you have the character, you can't decide on a costume or the script outline because you need to know what your character's viewpo...

At the base! wow... ive seen a hand n half break at the middle, but the base would of been the last place id of thought of. Breaking at the base is quite common in swords used as group resources by beginners in training. If it happens to your own sword it means you haven't got out of a bad habit by...

Sorry, but that's not a bend. It's a napkin! The size of the napkin varied depending on your duties: the man with a big one over his shoulder is the steward of the household. (Hence the staff: he's overseeing the servers delivering the pies.) Colin Middleton was wearing one just like it while servin...

Re: What do you know about the C15th Parliament?
Looks like I'm going to have to read the books then! You can see my difficulty: the source Craig's link goes to gives a single date on which Parliament was assembled, but gives no impression of how long it took them to agree to 33 statutes. But at least he's confirmed that Parliament wasn't attended...

What do you know about the C15th Parliament?
Doing a bit of reading about the background to our household, I note that John Howard was an MP in 1449, 1455, 1463, and 1467. My understanding of the workings of Parliament back then is a little sketchy, and I’d appreciate it if someone more knowledgeable could give me a brief overview. My impressi...
