'Off the shelf' swords?

Hi guys, This has probably been asked a million times before, but does anyone have any recommendations for reasonable 'off the shelf' swords? I'm toying with the idea of getting one for myself, but don't really have the money to commission something pretty from Binnsy or Heron etc. Of course I know ...

Viborg Shirt

Hi guys, I've got a massive pile of linen to make an undershirt and I want to do something particularly fancy with it. Has anyone got (Or know where I can get) a workable pattern of the Viborg shirt? I can find plenty of diagrams of how the front patches look, but I've read articles that mention a l...

Re: Yet another sword post from me!

Ok thanks guys, so the two handed 'viking' swords are just a bit of a fantasy thing. I had thought as much, but didn't hurt to ask :P I think I'll have a closer look at the Seaxes, they do look like a very useful sidearm to have. By the way, what is the proper way to pronounce Seax (If there is a pr...

Yet another sword post from me!

I've managed to find a guy who is willing to help me make myself a viking sword next summer, and I was just thinking about styles... I'm most likely going to use these fittings from Mercia Sveiter; http://www.re-enactment.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=58_63_85_167&products_id=767&osCsid=ukgqj...

Re: Captain of Archers

Could it perhaps be, that the ranks and positions etc. changed with each campaign and army? After all as English Archer pointed out the ranks structures weren't really made official to a fair bit later, so it could be possible that they were all used interchangeably. Maybe the ranks for an army were...

Viking trousers?

This probably seems a bit of a daft question, but did the vikings wear different types of trousers, or did they mostly wear the 'Rus' type baggy trousers and not use the closer fitting saxon type?

Also, were winingas/leg wraps/whatever people call them worn with the baggy trousers?

Re: Captain of Archers

I'm not sure of any sources from the time referring to 'Captains of Archers', but Bernard Cornwell's Azincourt has 'Centenars' of a group with 'Venetars' taking command of about a dozen of that unit. I'm not sure where Cornwell found these positions, but considering his usual attention to detail, I'...

Would this Viking Studes course be the one at Nottingham?

If it is, I'm applying there this year :D

Re: Hanwei Viking Sword

Well it would only be as a starter and I have a tight budget now, but hopefully in a few years I won't.

So I'm wondering if it's worth it as a temporary measure

Mini Mangonel or Trebuchet...

I'm in one of those slightly mischievous moods...

Anyone got any plans or tips to make a waterballoon/snowball sized mangonel or trebuchet?

And I guess I could possibly use it as part of a display or taking care of those annoying MOPS who claim to know everything

Hanwei Viking Sword

Hi guys, I'm after a sword to go a-viking with and I was wondering whether it would be worth getting the Hanwei 'Practical Viking Sword' You know the one that seems to be for sale at EVERY event going... I would have gone for one of the more expensive ones available but being a student, that's not g...

Re: Portable Forge

There's a vintage railway centre about two minutes from me and they have piles of spare rails so I should be ok for that.

I live just outside Cardiff, but I will be going to Caldicot and Mortimer's Cross if you're at any of those this month

Portable Forge

Hi, I'm looking into making myself a little portable forge (Not necessarily authentic), that I could use to make little bits and pieces and hopefully get good with it eventually. Have you got any tips/ideas on how/where to get myself a cheap (I'm a student  ) forge. I'm going to 'acquire' some ...
