I use kit or clothes interchangeably although kit does cover a wider range of things than just clothing. I must admit that being asked about my 'costume' really rankles, I know it's daft but it does. To put the cat amongst the proverbial pigeons, why should they care? It's their hobby; if they were to go skiing as their hobby each weekend they wouldn't be expected to 'put on a good display' Because generally you do not get paid to go sking. AAARRRGGGHHH!!!! NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! My reaction exactly! This is one of my personal bug bears as our societies 15th century herald / authenty-bod. Why do people make nice authentic clothing then insist on spoiling them for want of correct fastening?... It'll probably be my Herald's crusade...

I must admit that the main source I used for this is the Osprey Man-at-arms English Longbowman. If you look at most period illustrations they show no form of bracer at all, presumably the clothing/padding/armour worn is enough to do the job.
