Research show's that in addition to the school losing half its staff to the armed forces, the war also brought 'extra duties' for both the masters & pupil's.
A Home Guard was formed which had to parade every Sunday morning and performed patrols / exercises thought the war. Civil Defence was not forgotten with two 'blackout' patrols every evening checking the endless Stowe windows.
First Aid / Fire Fighting parties were also formed and trained, although according one Master "It seemed as soon as a team was trained, it broke up and the process had to start all over again".
On 9th May 1941 and the 7th July 1942 bombs fell on Stowe. The blast caused windows to shatter. As a result the glass roof of the Assembly was blacked out. It was believed the moon reflected on the shining roof and attracted the enemy bombers. where While in air raid shelters masters & pupils where entertained by a young George Melly.
